Vile Vile Creatures @ The Night &Day

V V C, Night & Day Manchester, 26/1/08.

Well first show of the year, had to wait awhile. The Creatures playing the N&D was going to be worth the wait though.
I was looking forward to this as I was off for the whole weekend, I'd booked into the Crown & Anchor and basically back into a familiar routine. Ate at my fave French restuarant, all was well with the world.

I got to the N&D about 8ish I think, only to see Jen stood outside having a quick ciggy. After a quick chat I went in and saw Sian and David at the bar. Sian said she was feeling a bit nervous playing the N&D because of all the bands she has seen there over the years.

Sian also told me they were going to play two new songs which may or may not work but they'll see. They kindly got me a complimentary beer too.

There were only two bands playing, a six piece rockabilly band who were on first and VVC, headlining the Night & Day for the first time. I forget the name of the first band but they weren't my cup ot tea really but I can't say they were rubbish. Their gimmick was an idiot onstage with them who just acted daft and pulled stupid faces with the odd scream into the mike.

When VVC came on they opened with one of their new songs which was an instrumental called Ricochet. They rattled through some great versions of Ghosts, Granny and Wilderness with Sian loosing her glasses as per usual. Then the second new song which they haven't titled yet. Jen of course got up onto the boxes at the front during FF which sounded great as always.

After David gave me his setlist complete with illustrations. After helping clear some of their gear away to the "band area" downstairs we had a beer in the downstairs room which was surprisingly sparse considering all the top bands that play there. Somehow I couldn't see Elanor Freiberger hanging around down there for long, or Beth for that matter. An interesting place though.

I headed of not long after midnight after saying my goodbye's and thanks for another enjoyable evening.

A shot of the N&D piano I often refer too!!

I had a dream.

A while back I had a dream which was sort of a band put together of my favorite artists. More of a Kristin and Louise Mason play with S-K really.

To expand on that I thought that this would be my dream band. Ok you can have Hendrix playing with Jaco Pastorius and Bonham etc etc, but I'd prefer to see this band on stage :-

Kristin Hersh - Electric and acoustic guitar/vocals.

Corin Tucker - Guitar/vocals

Louise Mason - Bass/backing vocals.

Laura Wills - Keyboards/vocals.

Janet Weiss - Drums.

Of course waiting in the wings as stand-ins would be
Laura Mary Carter (BRS) - Guitar/vocals
Ellie Erickson (EE) - Bass
Emma Damon (TVEGC) - Drums/vocals

Happy New 2008.

That's enough looking back, time to look forward to 08.

I ended up doing 53 gigs last year, I don't think I'll do as many this year but we'll see what turns up. I haven't got anything 'til I go and see VVC the last week of Jan. I then have 2 booked for the first week in Feb, Laura Veirs playing solo acoustic in Manchester and Enon/Ill Ease in Leeds. There is Kristin's Paradoxical undressing the back end of March too, is that a gig though?

I bought my usual shed load of stuff last year. I can't immediately think of any albums I'm looking forward to. There are probably loads but they escape me at the moment. Ah! Foals album is one and Kristin should get a 50ft Wave EP out sometime and BRS, damn of course.

That's it for now I think I'll start looking for some shows for Jan.

Happy New Year.
